/>Skip to main contentclockmenumore-arrownoyesDawgs EDTThe Browns received the ball first https://www.brownsfanshop.com/Howard-Wilson-Jersey , and a penalty on the kickoff set them back to the 11 yard line. Head coach Freddie Kitchens was going to give QB Baker Mayfield one series, but to operate out of the two-minute drill and a hurry up offense. Mayfields first pass fell incomplete and wide of WR Derrick Willies, but he didnt miss after that. Mayfield finished the drive 5-of-6 for 77 yards, capping the drive with a 24-yard dime to WR Rashard Higgins:The Browns first-team defense (those who were playing) also did a good job, especially DE Myles Garrett, who could not be contained. The offense got a bit ugly once QB Drew Stanton entered the game. Then, the Redskins got a big pass interference penalty on third down when S Eric Murray committed pass interference. A few plays later, QB Case Keenum found a wide open WR Robert Davis for a 46-yard touchdown. Two rookies CB Greedy Williams and S Sheldrick Redwine had a miscommunication where one of them was playing the wrong coverage. With the score tied 7-7, the Browns tried to strike back after Stanton found Higgins for a catch-and-run of 38 yards to the 2 yard line. Cleveland thought they had a touchdown to WR Antonio Callaway, who caught a tipped pass with a toe tap in the end zone. Officials ruled it incomplete, but Kitchens challenged the ruling. The officials didnt overturn it, and on 4th-and-goal from the 1 yard line, RB Dontrell Hilliard fumbled. Part-way into the second quarter, CB Terrance Mitchell forced a fumble from behind after a great 32-yard pass by QB Dwayne Haskins. Some players just have a gift of poking the ball out, and Mitchell is one of those guys.Clevelands offense couldnt muster anything, but a big story on the next drive came when LB Mack Wilson dropped back and intercepted a pass by the sideline before returning it 40 yards for a touchdown. That is noteworthy because Wilson already has two pick sixes in camp, so this is really starting to become a trend with him.K Greg Joseph added a 43-yard field goal to give the Browns a 17-7 lead at the half. The Redskins got a 35-yard field goal during the third quarter which was otherwise quiet. Cleveland did have a drive where WR Ishmael Hyman was about to score, but then he switched the football to his other arm to try stiff arming a defender and ended up fumbling. The start of the fourth quarter was highlighted again with a defensive play by Wilson, as he jumped up to make an athletic interception, his second of the game:Cleveland wasnt done yet. QB David Blough, the fourth quarterback of the game for the Browns, found WR D.J. Montgomery for an 11-yard touchdown pass with just over four minutes to play, giving the Browns a 24-10 lead. After the defense forced a stop https://www.brownsfanshop.com/Bernie-Kosar-Jersey , it was time for WR Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi to get a shot at returning the punt. He didnt disappoint, returning it 86 yards for a touchdown. Knowing his story, it felt so special, and the entire team seemed to come out from the bench and jump on top of him to celebrate. The only downside was that Joseph missed the extra point off the upright, keeping it a 30-10 game. Overall, for the game, Cleveland had some mistakes to clean up, but its always good when you have players shining in all three phases of the game. Quick HittersQB Baker Mayfield: 5-of-6 for 77 yards, 1 TD.RB Dontrell Hilliard: 9 carries, 19 yards. 3 catches, 34 yards (6 targets).WR Rashard Higgins: 5 catches, 98 yards (6 targets). 1 TD.LB Mack Wilson: 3 tackles (3 combined). 2 interceptions, 1 TD.CB Greedy Williams: 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 interception. Baker Mayfield looks poised for superstardom in his second year in the NFL." />Skip to main contentclockmenumore-arrownoyesDawgs in his second year in the NFL.EDTAnother year, and another new starting quarterback heading into training camp...but this time it really is different (and that isnt a tongue-in-cheek joke)!Tyrod Taylor was the Browns starting quarterback all of last offseason, with everyone knowing that Baker Mayfield was the future of the franchise. There was no doubt about the succession plan happening at some point, since Mayfield was a No. 1 overall pick. The only question was when it would happen. In last years training camp poll, 37% of fans thought that Mayfield wouldnt start a single game. 32% thought he would start 2-3 games. Only 8% of fans thought he would start more than 6 games; he started 13, and now he is firmly entrenched as not just the Browns starting quarterback, but one of the most hyped up players in the entire NFL heading into 2019. But hes not the only player at quarterback heading into training camp, as much as it may seem like that in fact, there are four on the roster! Lets take a look at each of them.
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports1. Baker Mayfield - Starting QBHeight: 6-1 | Weight: 215 lbs | Age: 24Experience: 2 years | College: OklahomaBaker Mayfield is a married man now, tying the knot in the dead period between minicamp and training camp. As a rookie, Mayfield threw for 3 Sheldrick Redwine Jersey ,725 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. In games that he played in, he compiled a record of 7-7, instantly turning the Browns franchise around with a rocket arm, swagger, and playmaking ability that none of the quarterbacks on the franchise since 1999 have really even come close to having. Add in Odell Beckham, one of the top 5 receivers in the NFL, and Mayfield should be in line for a great sophomore season. There are some things that Mayfield needs to work on in his second season. One of the biggest things that I recall (more so earlier in the year) was him not quite putting enough lift on the ball to receivers who were open past the linebackers Mayfield would zip the ball over the offensive line, but not quite above the reach of the dropping linebacker. Jake Burns of Cleveland.com also points out how Mayfield can improve when rolling to his left something that tends to be difficult for many right-handed quarterbacks. We will see how those elements improve in training camp.Final Roster Odds: 100%
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports2. Drew Stanton - Veteran QBHeight: 6-3 | Weight: 226 lbs | Age: 35Experience: 12 years | College: Michigan StateThis is Drew Stantons final year under contract with the Browns, where he will account for $3.765 million against the cap. Entering his 12th year in the NFL, Stanton did not have to take a single snap in the 2018 regular season. Despite his lackluster career numbers (52.4% completion percentage, 20 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions), coaches often cite his record as a starter, which is 11-6. What those numbers tell me is that Stanton might be able to start and manage a game in a pinch, but hes not going to be a starter for an extended period of time.Last year, the biggest asset that Stanton carried with him was his experience in working with and mentoring former No. 1 overall picks: Matthew Stafford with the Detroit Lions, Andrew Luck with the Indianapolis Colts, Carson Palmer with the Arizona Cardinals, and then Baker Mayfield with the Browns. I think the Browns will want to carry three quarterbacks in 2019, but I dont know if Stanton will be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. Final Roster Odds: 90%
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports3. Garrett Gilbert - AAF SigningHeight: 6-4 | Weight: 230 lbs | Age: 28Experience: 2 years | College: Southern MethodistAfter the AAF folded earlier this year, NFL teams went in and scratched the barrel for talent. One of the players Cleveland signed was Garrett Gilbert http://www.brownsfanshop.com/Austin-Seibert-Jersey , who played for the leagues Orlando team. He was the leagues passing leader and MVP when it folded, throwing for 2,152 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. If youre looking for some more team chemistry, though, Gilbert and Baker Mayfield can bond a bit over the fact that they went to the same high school, albeit many years apart.Gilbert may be new to the Browns, but hes been waiting for a quite awhile to make it big in the NFL. He was a 6th round draft pick by the Rams in 2014, but didnt see his first regular season action until last year, when he made a relief appearance for the Carolina Panthers, throwing three passes. GM John Dorsey was intrigued by the growth Gilbert showed in the AAF after having worked with Steve Spurrier:Here is one of his touchdowns to another former Browns player:Final Roster Odds: 75%
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports4. David Blough - Rookie QBHeight: 6-0 | Weight: 200 lbs | Age: 23Experience: Rookie | College: PurdueDavid Blough enters camp as the teams undrafted free agent quarterback, coming out of Purdue. In an interview with Rivals, Blough talked about choosing Cleveland over the Detroit Lions, and how assistant GM Eliot Wolf was the guy who really made the pitch for him to come to the Browns:Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst credits Bloughs leadership skills, toughness, and sense of the pocket, but doesnt feel he has the arm strength or ability to put drive on his deep passes at the NFL level. Showing his sense of humor, Blough had fun as the lowest-rated rookie quarterback in this years Madden game:Blough may ultimately be a camp arm only, but the fact that Wolf seemed to recruit him could give him an extended look on the practice squad, if he impresses during camp.Final Roster Odds: 5%
